CRUISING THE TRENT SEVERN

Just try to get lost, we dare you. LOL

The Trent Severn Waterway from start to finish started construction in 1833 at Bobcaygeon and finished at Port Severn in 1920. 240-miles from Lake Ontario. The Navigation channel has a targeted controlled depth of only 6-feet from start to finish. This is why if your draft exceeds 5', depending on rainfall, drought, and water levels, you may either have to sign a damage waiver, or they may not let you in. The locks vary in raising the water level few exceptions; the Big Chute Marine Railway has a lift of 58 feet, the Kirkfield Lock has lift of 49 feet, and the Peterborough Lock has a lift of 65 feet. Peaking at Balsam Lake at 600 feet above Lake Ontario and 250 feet above Lake Huron's, Georgian Bay ad 900 feet above sea level.
Standard lock dimensions are one are 120 feet long by 32 feet wide. The two exceptions are the lock 44, the Big Chute Marine Railway at 100 feet long by 24 feet wide. and lock 45 at Port Severn is only 84 feet long and 23 feet wide. this sets your boat's size limits to 99' long 23' wide and a fully loaded draft of 5' or less from one end to the other.

PETERBOROUGH HYDRAULIC LIFT LOCK

PETERBOROUGH - Mile 89, is the largest town on the Trent-Severn Waterway. The Municipal Marina is nestled between Locks 19 and 20 on the south shore of Little Lake. This is the last major stop until reaching Midland. Peterborough is home to the world’s highest hydraulic lift lock, a very popular tourist site. It is also the home of the world’s largest collection of canoes in the world as well as the Canadian Canoe Museum.

Home to more than 350 restaurants, award winning regional beer and wine and you have a food scene that rivals anywhere in the world. We strongly suggest the Peterborough Marina and a plan to stay at least 2 days. Let tomorrow be the day you experience through the Peterborough Lift Lock.

THE BIG CHUTE MARINE RAILWAY

Big Chute, Lock 44 The Big Chute Marine Railway at Mile 232.5 is 35-miles from Orillia. The Big Chute is the only marine railway in North America. It is 100 feet long and 24 feet wide. It works like a big cradle on railroad tracks to carry boats up and over a land mass. Plan on adding about 4 hours to your cruising day just to transit the Big Chute Railway. Much like a Lock, boats simply enter the cradle and into waiting straps which are like those you see on a travel lift. Once the boats are loaded into the straps, the cradle carrying the boat lifts the boat out of the water and over the land and lowers it back down in the water on the other side.
